I wanted to take a moment to check in and tell you what we have been doing since my last post in July. Shortly after the roof was finished, we began the task of building the handicap access ramp and fire escape system.
This was very interesting work! Each post that supports the decking had to be attached to a cross tie that was buried either three feet deep, or as deep as the hard clay/rock layer, whichever is shallowest. I was going to give you a count of how many holes we dug and how many posts we planted, but I lost count long ago! Most of the 6×6 posts are eight feet long, but the four posts used to support the highest decks were 24 feet long. Those long posts were lifted in place with the assistance of a rope from the window/doorway above.
The good news is that the final post was planted in place on Friday and we should finish the decking on December 1. We are very happy to see all of that digging come to an end!
I apologize for not checking in sooner, but not much else has been happening.

I was out at the building last Friday, June 30, and the contractor had almost completed the roof decking. I took some pictures. Click here to see them.

The contractor has since finished his work. We are awaiting an inspection so the tar paper can be laid and the roofer called to complete the roof.
The regular Friday crew has been working for the last two Fridays on laying the foundation of a two story deck that will make up part of the fire escape system. This past Friday, we anchored, raised and squared 2 twenty foot long 6 inch square columns that will support both decks.

On Wednesday, the contractor began installing the sub-roof decking. This decking lies beneath the other layers that make up the roof and is visible from inside the building. I was on-site Friday and took some pictures. Click here to see them all.
